About this artist
When I was growing up I loved drawing - art lessons were always the highlight of my school day and as I got older the prospect of leaving home to study art at university was very enticing. I did my degree at Brighton and had a fantastic time, although very little of that time was actually spent working! Unsurprisingly, I left with a third but somehow got a job with Bloomsbury Books immediately after graduating.
After Bloomsbury , I went on to hone my skills as an illustrator with the likes of Walker Books, Oxford University Press and Macmillan. It was fantastic training and I have now been working as an author/illustrator for fifteen years and absolutely love it.
The inspiration for my books comes from a mixture of fun and silliness. For the visual side of things, I have been influenced by beautiful and exciting illustrations of monsters and jungles found in classics such as Where the Wild Things Are, or the wild creatures and fantastically decorative foliage in Rousseau's paintings. I’m a big kid really - as well as jungles, monsters and animals I love to draw aliens, dinosaurs and robots! I also enjoy looking at nature and trying to steal great colour combinations that I can put in my pictures..
My career has been boosted through meeting Vicki Willden-Lebrecht and joining the Bright Agency – since then I've written books for Hodder, Simon and Schuster and Random House as well as illustrating for Scholastic, Harper Collins, and Random House US , and producing greetings cards for the likes of Roger La Borde. As well as getting me fantastic jobs, Vicki has really helped me to develop my style and brings my work to life by making it happen and getting it printed.
My latest book - Barry the Fish With Fingers for Simon and Schuster - has done incredibly well; I’d love to do another Barry book and design some greetings cards based on the character as he’s an absolute star
