Laura Wood
Laura Wood is a freelance illustrator currently living in Melbourne.
She was born in 1985 in a small town near Milan. Since she didn't have any brothers of sisters, when she was a kid she spent a lot of time on her own. She used to pass endless afternoons reading books and drawing sitting on the floor in the living room.
When she was 13 she decided she wanted to be a comic artist, but she never got to study art at school because her parents were afraid she would have ended jobless. So she studied languages in High School and then Cinema and Multimedia at Uni.
During her teenager years she dedicated lot of her spare time to art and craft in lots of different ways: writing stories, playing the guitar, drawing on school book edges, making jewellery with clay, studying photography.
For a few years she thought she wanted to become a professional video editor for fictional movies and documentaries. The main reason of this was because she had the need to tell stories.
As soon as she finished Uni, she decided she wanted to do something different and exciting and she decided to spend a gap year in Australia. She travelled around Australia in a van for 5 months, driving more than 20 thousand kilometres, stopping here and there to get a cash-in-hand job to fund the next destination. It was a very tough journey and completely different from what she imagined at first. When she arrived in Melbourne she fell in love with the people and the great cultural energy of the place.
Three years later she still lives in Melbourne and she is now applying to become an Australian resident. Also, she is about to complete a Diploma of Illustration, her first art training ever.
Now she works as a freelance illustrator from her home studio and she dreams one day to have a house full of cats.
She also dreams to illustrate children's books that her 5-years-old sister would be excited to read.
