Kirsteen Harris-Jones

I left school at 16 and entered the world of art through the North Wales school of art and design and never looked back. My career has spanned lots of areas from advertising houses, creative/ graphic design houses and even animation studios. After 20 yrs and a huge semi- break to stay at home and look after my children, where I remained busy mainly as a freelance artist. I decided to go back to University and gained a Degree in children's illustration for publishing. My achievements to date are winning the NEWI Caldecott prize, and a highly commended at Macmillan for 'Gilda's brother'. The highlight being, Chris Riddell expressing how much he loved my Tiger illustration!

Artist skills

  • Traditional

Clients include

  • I think I was born holding pencil and paper
  • as I cannot really remember doing anything else as child. I have a passion for design in any form and especially love fashion illustration. I was a frequent visitor to Harrogate fashion week with my mother who was a seamstress
  • where she taught me to appreciate style
  • colour
  • texture and pattern. I remember vividly receiving a tin of Caran D'ache pencils at the tender age of eight
  • it was as if someone had handed me a golden nugget the size of my head. I used them all until they were just tiny little nubs
  • this I think was the defining moment that set the president of things to come.... So off I went to the North Wales college of art and technology
  • for four years and left with a B'Tec in Design and a HND in graphic design and illustration. I went on to work in lots of places doing lots of different things such as
  • trainee visualizer for an advertising company in Manchester
  • an animation character developer in Tattenhall Cheshire
  • a junior graphic designer at 'Station House' creative design
  • then back to a cartoon studio working on caricatures
  • and even an occupational therapist! When my children were born
  • I settled for being a freelance illustrator
  • which ticked along very nicely. A few years passed......eleven to be precise! And I felt that I wanted to be part of something again
  • so I took myself back of to the University of Glyndwr met up with my old lecturer who said the course for me was the
  • illustration for Children's publishing. Which I absolutely loved. I was chosen to exhibit at the D&AD design awards
  • won a highly commended at Macmillan and won the Glyndwr University 'Caldecott award'...which was a real hoot! I left three years later with a BA hons and my sights set on picture books and beyond...the rest as they say is history
  • here I am at 'Bright' doing what I love......or as my children put it
  • I get paid for colouring in! Not a bad life and long may it continue.......
